Detectives from Ondo police command have arrested a 21-year-old final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Olubodun Sanni, over the killing of a 20-year-old female student of the school, Ifeoluwa Adekunle, who was stabbed to death in her room.

The final-year student of the geology department of the institution, Sanni, who lived in the same off-campus hostel with the deceased, stabbed the young girl to death over her iPhone XR.

However, the police, who swung into action after the case was reported, nabbed the suspect using the victim’s iPhone XR, which was traced to him after an investigation.

According to the police, the suspect confessed to killing the girl because of her iPhone, saying he was attracted to the lady’s phone.

The young boy, who never had any interaction with the deceased, approached the girl and became friends with her, only to kill her at the end of the day.

According to the police source, ” the suspect confessed even before his parents that on that ill-fated day, he approached the victim to transfer some film from her telephone to his iPad.

“The unsuspecting female student obliged him but didn’t allow him into her room. She told the suspect that her telephone battery was low.

“The suspect then excused himself to come back later with his power bank to charge the victim’s telephone.

” He came back to the victim’s room very late and was allowed into the room, where he grabbed the victim by the neck and stabbed her in the chest with a knife he brought along.

” The suspect then took the victim’s telephone, destroyed her SIM card, and inserted his own SIM card.

” Police findings showed that he was making use of the phone during the day and hid it inside an uncompleted building close to the hostel.”

The police traced the call log of the suspect, and it was discovered that the suspect had been using the phone to speak with his mother, who was subsequently arrested.

“The mother was arrested, and later, after interrogation, it led police detectives to her son’s hostel, where he was arrested.

Parading the suspected killer student alongside other criminals, the state police commissioner, Abayomi Oladipo, said in Akure that the suspect was arrested by using modern technology to trace her stolen phone.

Oladipo said that “On February 2, 2024, a case of suspected murder was reported to the police that one Adekunle Ifeoluwa ‘F’ aged 20 years, a 300-level student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, was found in a pool of blood at her off-campus hostel, was rushed to the university health centre, and later referred to a specialist hospital in Ikare Akoko, where she was confirmed dead.

“In the course of the investigation, the police discovered that the deceased phone was missing. The police, through the use of modern technology, traced the phone to one Olubodun Sanni ‘m’, aged 21 years, a final-year student of the same school who is also a neighbour to the deceased in the hostel.

Oladipo added that “the recovered phone led to further questioning of the suspect, who gave details of what happened in his confessional statement, including how he entered the deceased room, stabbed her in the chest with a knife, and stole her iPhone XR.

The police commissioner said that the suspect would be charged in court at the end of the investigation.
