The Niger State Police Command has washed its hands off the rumours making the rounds in the state that it is planning to carry out raids on the students’ lodge of the state-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, (IBBU)Lapai, over the alleged presence of suspected internet fraudsters.

In a letter circulating online and purportedly written by the Lapai Divisional Police Officer, (DPO)Yusuf Musa, had stated that the police received reports of high cybercrime activities by the Institution’s students from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

The letter, which was said to have been addressed to the University management, said the operation would be carried out on Tuesday, 11th April 2023.

But in a quick response, the Police Public Relations Officer,(PPRO) Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, in a Press statement issued and made available to the newsmen on Tuesday in Minna, the state capital disowned the letter, saying, “the letter was fake and didn’t emanate from the division.”

He stated further that an investigation was ongoing to arrest the source of the letter.

“It’s fake. It does not originate from the division.

“It’s under investigation with a view to arresting the mischief maker,” Abiodun said.
