Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have killed a suspected kidnapper in Aniocha South of Delta state, while the others managed to escape.

The perpetrators had seized a victim (whose identity was withheld) as he was riding his motorcycle along Ashama Anu-Ugbo Farm in Nsukwa last weekend, demanding a ransom of N5,000,000.

After notifying the police about the incident, an intensified operation was launched to rescue the victim, as stated by DSP Bright Edafe, the state police public relations officer, in a statement on Wednesday.

The police spokesperson stated:

“On Saturday, 09 December 2023, around 12:10 hrs, acting on credible intelligence regarding the kidnappers’ plan to collect the demanded ransom, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP George Omunu, promptly mobilized the Divisional Patrol Teams with support from operatives of the Command’s tactical teams and other security stakeholders within the Nsukwa area.

“The suspects were located at various points within the Egbudu-Akah bush, where the team thoroughly searched the bushes.

“Upon spotting the rescue team approaching from a distance, the kidnappers fired at the team. In response to this aggression, the police retaliated with superior firepower, forcing the captors to hastily flee, abandoning the male victim who was subsequently rescued unharmed.

The statement continued, noting that the operational team later returned to the Egbudu-Akah bush, where one of the suspected kidnappers (name unknown) was apprehended with gunshot wounds. The suspect was rushed to General Hospital Isheagu for medical attention, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Additionally, the Raiders Squad of the state police recovered a single-barrel cut-to-size gun while intervening in Boboroku Community, Ethiope West council, to address disturbances caused by cultist activities.

Upon sighting the patrol team, the suspect managed to escape, prompting the police to chase after them. The fleeing individuals left behind a bag, which, upon inspection, contained one (01) Single Barrel Cut-To-Size Gun. The recovered exhibit is now in custody, and an investigation has commenced.

DSP Edafe also reported that operatives of the Eagle-net squad, during a stop-and-search along Odurubu-Bomadi road on Tuesday, discovered a motorcycle carrying two passengers. Upon searching, a locally made cut-to-size gun and four cartridges were found concealed in a bag. A suspect is currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
