Remain committed to nation building, Makinde tells Corps members

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has urged Corps members under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) currently undergoing orientation in the state to show a high sense of responsibility during the course of their service.

The governor said this during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch A stream 2 Corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Iseyin.

He stated that the success and survival of Nigeria as a country depend on their service to the country, urging them to remain committed and dedicated to nation-building.

Makinde, represented by the chairman of NYSC Oyo state governing board and commissioner for youth and sports, Seun Fakorede, said that it is imperative for youths to remain committed in whatever capacity they find themselves.

“I admonish you to see your call to serve as a call to dedication and commitment in whatever capacity whether now or in the future for the fortune of this nation.

“No nation is great where the largest echelon and cream of its future, the youth are not mainstreamed into the challenging task of nation building.”

Furthermore, he implored the Corps members to cultivate a healthy relationships amongst themselves during and after the orientation exercise and expressed readiness to provide quality infrastructure and enabling environment for the Corps members.

“We are aware of the needs of the camp and I can promise you that all the plans are in the pipeline to ensure that you have a conducive environment.”

He congratulated the Corps members on the successful completion of their academic programmes and mobilisation for the national service assignment.

Adding that, “I enjoin you to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and equip yourself at no cost with skills that will make you stand the test of time.

“I encourage you to be open-minded and assimilate all the training you will receive in camp to make your stay in Oyo state very productive and memorable.”

On his part, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Seun Fakorede represented by the Director of Youth Development, Ministry of Youths and Sports, Alhaja K.O Mustapha, admonished the Corps members to display a high level of maturity and participate in all activities in the camp.

“First of all, I want to congratulate you all on the successful completion of your academic pursuit from your respective institutions. I ask you today to always avail yourselves of physical and leadership training as well as entrepreneurship and skill acquisition training.

“The orientation programme has been specially designed towards inculcating the ideals of patriotism, service and humility into you under a regimented environment.

“Feel at home, be united on all fronts. Live in the oneness of mind even as you are from different parts of the country. Be disciplined and respectful.

“Obey all instructions given, and always have in mind that we have concluded arrangements to make sure that the stay here in Oyo state is productive, exciting and rewarding,” she said.

Earlier, the Oyo NYSC state coordinator, Mr Odoba Abel Oche, while appreciating the state government’s efforts in supporting the Scheme, revealed that ” as of last night, a total of 2,216 prospective Corps members are in camp.”

Additionally, Odoba also congratulated the governor on his re-election, in order to “continue good governance.”

He said, ” I must show appreciation to the Governor, Engr. Seyi Abiodun Makinde for his immense support of the scheme. I thank him for his material and financial assistance which has helped us tremendously.”

He also applauded the efforts of the NYSC governing board for its support and contribution to the smooth running of the Scheme.

The state coordinator urged the Corps members to “continue to be of good conduct, remain disciplined and dedicated.”

Present at the Swearing-in ceremony was the Chief Judge of Oyo state, Justice Iyabo Yerima who administered the oath of allegiance.
