Amidst the ongoing general workers’ strike in the country, the Senate has postponed the probe into the expulsion of two University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) students originally slated for Tuesday, November 14.

Cyprian Igwe and Olamilekan Oladeru, the Director of Social and Culture, as well as the Director of Sports of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university, respectively, were expelled by the university authorities in July this year over an alleged plan to protest the proposed school fees hike. They had just completed their final year examinations and were awaiting results when the school rusticated them for the same alleged offence.

Dissatisfied with their expulsion, they petitioned the Senate, seeking intervention to persuade the university authorities to reinstate them, as they believed they were being punished for an offence they did not commit.

Addressing the development on Wednesday, Igwe and Oladeru, in separate interviews with the Nigerian Tribune, mentioned they were already at the National Assembly on Tuesday to honour the invitation to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for a hearing. However, around 2.30 pm, they were informed that the hearing could not proceed as scheduled due to the ongoing workers’ strike.

According to Cyprian, they were instructed to return next Tuesday for the hearing if the strike had been called off by then; otherwise, a new date would be communicated to them.

The duo expressed confidence in the Senate and believed it was the right place for them to seek justice.
