R. Kelly, a well-known American musician, has been transferred to a prison in North Carolina, where he will complete his 30 years of jail time.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Robert Sylvester Kelly, better known as Kelly, was transferred from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, on Wednesday of last week.
The Chicago native was sentenced in February to one additional year in prison for his Chicago conviction federal child pornography and child enticement charges, on top of the 30 years he’s already serving for a separate conviction out of New York.
In September 2022, a federal jury in Chicago found Kelly guilt of six counts accusing him of sexually abusing three women – who testified under the pseudonyms Jane, Pauline, and Nia – on video, while acquitting him of enticement charges involving two other accusers, Tracy and Brittany.
The same jury cleared him of seven other charges, including obstruction of justice, which accused him and two accomplices of tampering with his 2008 Cook County child pornography trial.
Kelly is still charged with soliciting prostitutes in Minnesota, but that case has been put on hold since his federal cases took priority.
Kim Foxx, the state’s attorney for Cook County, made the decision last month to drop the charges of sexual abuse and assault against Kelly, citing the fact that he already faced a lengthy prison sentence and the fact that her office’s limited resources would be better used investigating other sexual assault cases.
When Kelly, 56, is just a little bit older than 79, he might be eligible for release from prison.
