University of Jos Students Union Government, SUG, has raised the alarm over the continuous killings of students of the institution by hoodlums. Four students have been killed in the last five days.

The alarm is coming on the heels of  the killing of a 100 level student of the university who was allegedly pulled out of a moving tricycle and stabbed to death around Bauchi Road in Jos North LGA of the state capital.

Nationnewslead gathered that the student boarded  a tricycle from the permanent site of the university to the main campus, but got pulled out on the road and stabbed to death.

As at the time of filing this report, his remains were  soaked in a pool of his own blood at the scene of the heinous act.

Addressing reporters in Jos, the SUG President, Comrade Danladi Joshua Adankala, lamented that there was no genuine commitment demonstrated by the government in addressing the ugly trend in the state.

“At the risk of being misunderstood, we dare to state that just within few hours of the unfortunate incident of 14th August, the security agencies combed the area and arrested more than 20 suspects as contained in the press statement issued by the Nigerian Police Force, Plateau State Command.

“This means the security agencies can be effective but unfortunately, the innocent students of the University of Jos do not deserve such prompt attention and energy.

“Our tears for justice have generated nothing else than more pains, hurts, fears, sorrows and endless lamentations. If we really have a government that can respond swiftly to the Rukuba Road incident, one wonders what is happening to us the students of the University of Jos. This is no doubt an affirmation of the saying that “all animals are not equal.”

The students demanded that the federal and the state government should  as a matter of urgency expand the scope of transportation services available to students and staff both on and off campus adding that this will enable them to boycott the services of keke and bike riders most of whom they suspect are among our attackers and killers.

They further argued that University authority should establish a market or multipurpose store where basic foodstuff could be sold  on the  campus.

“This will prevent us from unnecessary trips to the markets in the neighbouring communities where our economic impact is not even appreciated.

“As a matter of urgency, the state government should appeal to the federal government to facilitate building of perimeter fencing for  our institution.

“There should be more accommodation (hostels) for students of the University of Jos. This will go a long way in reducing the number of students who stay off campus.”

The Management of the institution has however allayed the fears expressed by the students, assuring  that all measures have been taken to safeguard the lives and property of members of the university community especially staff and students.

According to a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, Abdullahi Abdullahi, security has been beefed up at the various campuses and students hostels to forestall any breach of peace.

According to him, “giving an update of the security situation in the university, the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Gray Goziem Ejikeme, called on all parents and guardians whose wards are residing within the university premises to keep their minds at rest as the students’ security will not be compromised for any reason.

“Professor Ejikeme appreciated the efforts of the Plateau State Government, Plateau State Police Command and other security agencies for their prompt response to the university’s request for the deployment of additional security personnel at various strategic locations within the university.

“The Acting Vice-Chancellor, who went round the various hostels of the university to assess the situation on ground, used the opportunity to address the students.

“He empathized with them on account of the security threats, fears and hardships they had been experiencing since the breach of peace was recorded and the 24-hour curfew was imposed in Jos. Professor Ejikeme encouraged the students to remain calm, non-violent and law-abiding in their hostels and advised them to remain calm as everything was being done to guarantee their safety and bring the situation back to normal.”
