Ward Attendants employed at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja organized a peaceful protest on Thursday following the tragic death of one of their colleagues, Salamatu Aliu, who worked in the post-natal ward.

They urged the Federal Ministry of Health to investigate the hospital’s operations thoroughly.

During the protest, one of the attendants, speaking anonymously, recounted the events leading to Salamatu Aliu’s demise.

Salamatu had sought medical attention at the hospital after completing her seven-day night shift on Sunday evening.

However, doctors and nurses on duty referred her to the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja due to a lack of electricity at the Federal Teaching Hospital.

Tragically, Salamatu Aliu passed away upon arrival at the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja before receiving medical care.

The attendant expressed frustration and placed blame on the perceived indifference of the doctors and nurses at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja for their colleague’s untimely death.

The action which was described as unbecoming of the Accident and Emergency Ward and negligence of duty especially by Doctors and Nurses led to the peaceful protest by the Ward Attendants chanting songs such as “all lives matter and are equal. Stop treating us unfairly as if we are not human”.

Our reporter at the scene of the protest said the Ward Attendants were pacified to go back to work, and the issue will be thoroughly investigated.

Attempt to contact the Director of Administration proved abortive as he was not on seat.

Speaking on the matter, legal adviser to the Hospital, Enny O. Esq said the matter just got to his notice and is being addressed to ascertain what actually transpired and take the necessary action about it.

It could be recalled that a similar incident happened in AIE which led to the beating of some medical personnel by relatives of a patient who died due to alleged negligence and led to downtools by Doctors for days.
