As Nigerians begin to count the weeks and days to the May 29, 2023 handover date at the national and state levels, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has reiterated its commitment to deliver on the party’s manifestos as promised during the electioneering campaign.

Speaking with Tribune Online in an interview on Sunday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of NNPP, Dr Agbo Major, said candidates elected on the platform of the party from the governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf, National and State Houses of Assembly members-elect are duty-bound to deliver good governance and democratic dividends to Nigerians as spelt out in NNPP’s manifestos.

“We have always promised Nigerians that ours is a party with clear-cut manifestos that our candidates who are elected on the platform of the party will always stay within the confine of the provision of the manifesto of the party. And this is the first time we are coming out with a governor. And I can tell you that by the time our governor is inaugurated in May, he would do exactly what the party manifesto is talking about which is targeted at the ordinary people.

“Our senators and House of Representatives members will also play the National Assembly politics the way it should be properly done by ensuring that we have a very robust legislative arrangement where questions are asked and answers are given. The whole idea is to ensure that dividends of democracy are delivered to the people,” Agbo said.

When asked how the party is coping following the resignation of the erstwhile national chairman, Professor Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, Agbo said the party has already filled the position as former Zonal National Vice Chairman (North East), Alhaji Abba Kawu Alli, has stepped in in acting capacity for three months.

“Some changes are taking place. You know nature abhors vacuum especially when it comes to politics. Professor Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali (former national chairman) has been replaced with erstwhile North East Zonal vice chairman, Alhaji Abba Kawu Alli, who will be in an acting capacity for three months. The deputy national chairman also resigned and we have Prince Nwaeze Onu who is also acting for three months.

“Then in terms of the way forward for the party, we are putting together a small retreat preparatory to the inauguration of the Kano State governor-elect, our senators and all of that. Maybe when we come out with the full details we will let you know. But we are moving.”

Tribune Online reports that NNPP came fourth during the February 25 presidential election as its presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, scored 1,496,671 votes. The NNPP governorship candidate in Kano State governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf beat his closest rival, APC’s candidate, Nasir Gawuna. While Kabir Yusuf polled 1,019,602 votes, Gawuna scored 890,705 votes.
