The Zamfara state commissioner of information and culture, Mannir Muazu Haidara, has disclosed that the state government is determined to overhaul and improve the welfare of media workers in the state.

Haidara said that the effort is to create a conducive atmosphere for media practitioners in the state.

The Commissioner made this known while addressing the staff of media houses today, shortly after his familiarisation tour of state-owned media houses in the state.

“The visit aims to assess the achievements and challenges facing the agencies for immediate government interventions.”

Haidara, who was overwhelmed with the reception accorded to him by the management of the agencies, however, noted with dismay the decay of some infrastructure in some media houses.

According to him, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal is media-friendly, with concern and zeal for a conducive working environment and the welfare of media workers.

“We’ll soon overhaul them to meet the taste of time.”.

“I had gone around and seen challenges. Let me assure you that His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, has a fashion for media and is committed to addressing all the challenges facing these media agencies,” he reassured.

On the issue of staff training, Haidara disclosed that the Ministry of Information and Culture has already designed a series of training and retraining programmes for senior and junior staff and agencies under the Ministry to improve their service delivery.

“Training and retraining of our staff is part of our priority; already, arrangements have been concluded by the Ministry for the commencement of phase one training of over 70 staffers in the journalism profession,” he stated.

He commended the entire staff and management of the agencies for their commitment and determination to service and further called on them to continue with the good work they are doing, be law-abiding citizens and fear Allah in discharging their responsibilities

Earlier in their separate remarks, the heads of state-owned media organisations, which included Zamfara Radio headed by Rufai Mohammed Anka, Zamfara State Television, Engr. Sani Aliyu, Zamfara State Newspaper Company, Ahmed Sani Tsafe, Adamu Sani Katuru of the Government Printing Press, Hassana Muhammad Bukkuyum of the Censorship Board, and Engr. Rabiu Bakura of Gold City lauded the historic visits.

They both highlight some of the achievements recorded and challenges facing their agencies, which include lack of manpower development, decay of infrastructure, and staff welfare.

“With all the challenges facing our agencies, we ensure that all revenue generated is remitted to the internal revenue board,” they noted.

They appealed to the state government for the provision of utility vehicles to the agencies in the state.
