Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has explained the reason behind the decision of the Southern governors to demand the rotation of the presidency among other decisions reached during a meeting in Lagos recently.

According to Makinde, the Southern governors decided to shun political affiliation or party differences to make what he described as the ‘far-reaching decisions’ in the interest of fairness, equity, justice, and unity of the country.

The governor spoke yesterday in a remark while receiving the report of the PDP Southwest Reconciliation Committee at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The committee was led by its chairman, who is also a former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Makinde lamented that the country is still in dire need of men and women of conscience, who are thinking progressively about the country, irrespective of party or political affiliations, a point obvious to the governors of the Southern states.

The governor said: “Irrespective of the outcome of the zonal congress, the country as a whole is in dire need of men and women of conscience, men and women that are thinking progressively about this country.

“And that is why a few days ago, the governors from the Southern part of the country came together and without looking or thinking about party affiliations, we took far-reaching decisions in the interest of this country, in the interest of fairness, equity and justice for everybody in this country.”

On the report, Makinde noted that although many things have changed within the party between the time the committee was set up and the time the report is being submitted, but he hailed the Oyinlola-led committee for the painstaking effort to complete the task.

He assured that the report will be looked into and see how it could be used to mend broken walls that have resulted in the new wave of defection of some key members of the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He added that the younger politicians and political leaders still have a lot to learn from the older generation, especially in terms of putting in efforts to ensure tasks are seen through and completed, irrespective of circumstances.

He assured that the report would be forwarded to the zonal executives since at the time the committee was set up, he was the rallying-point of the party in the region.

Presenting the report, Oyinlola appreciated Makinde for counting the members worthy of serving in the committee.

He expressed optimism that if the leaders would conscientiously look at the report and execute the recommendations made, the party in the zone would be in good stead.
