Nationnewslead report that House of Representatives candidate of All Progressive Congress in the 2023 general election, Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency, Hon. Seun Odofin has advocated better welfare and life insurance policy for journalists in Nigeria.
Hon. Seun Odofin made the submission in his message to mark the World Press Freedom Day 2023.
Thanking the press for the massive supports he received during his electioneering, he advised the media to continue to promote unity in diversity among Nigerians.
Odofin expressed sadness over poor renumeration of journalists and condemned bastardization of the profession through the activities of some illegitimate individuals, serial attacks, harassment and death faced by men of the Fourth Estate while discharging their civic responsibilities.
Celebrated every 3rd May and marking the 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision proclaiming an international day for press freedom, this year’s theme is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights” (working title), signifying the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights.
“I’m deeply sad comparing the essential roles of the press in our society to the life they live.
“Unequivocally, the renumeration, serious and consistent attacks, threats and harassment, atime’s death faced in the course of their duties are unexplainable. More disturbing is the activities of some illegitimate individuals using the social media to promote their provocative trade. Everyone is now appearing like journalist.
“Need for me to once again thank the press for the massive supports I received during my electioneering. Let me add my voice that now is the time for life insurance cover and attractive renumeration for the men of the Fourth realm of the Estate. That’s where to begin the transformation.
“They need to see the worth for putting their lives, time and energy at risk to unravel the mystery and keep the world informed.
“It’s dangerous to be misinformed or uninformed. That will birth deformed society. The consequences can ever be imagined than experienced That’s why the professional information managers should be encouraged to help the world with objective, timely and balance news.
“I celebrate the gentlemen of the press and wish you happy celebration.”
