A staunch member and elder of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Abuja Diocese, has condemned in strong terms, the recent uncouth statement made by the Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr Sunday Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche in Abuja, to spite the person of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. The elder who is one of the members of the Prelate Sunday Uche’s entourage, expressed disappointment over the prelate’s statement shortly after the Award ceremony designed by the Prelate for the Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.

Speaking to some newsmen, the church elder who did not want his name in print, wondered what could have prompted the Prelate to utter such a word, having been a direct beneficiary of Governor Emmanuel’s human and infrastructual developments in Akwa Ibom State which he (Prelate Uche) has poured encomiums on the Governor on several occassions.

Our impeccable source hinted that Prelate Sunday Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche had earlier packaged an Award and invited the Governor to receive the Award (which would have been the Prelate’s opportunity to have a big time cashout), but due to his very busy schedules, the Governor opted to send a representative to receive the Award on his behalf, but the Prelate declined, and insisted that the Governor appear in person to receive the Award. Our source also hinted that the Prelate informed him that he made request for financial support to the Governor but he didn’t respond; and all his (Prelate’s) efforts to reach out to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and strategy, yielded no success. The elder said that the action by the Governor may not have gone down well with the Prelate, who decided to organize same Award Ceremony for Senator Godswill Akpabio to make money, and also use the occassion to spite Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Methodist faithful frowned at Prelate Uche’s action and said that clergys should concentrate more on propagating the gospel of Christ, rather than indulging in desperate money-making ventures to extort money from politicians.

Recall that the Prelate Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr Sunday Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche, had said that, Minister, Niger Delta Affairs Ministry, Senator Godswill Akpabio, ” left behind shoes too large for others to wear in Akwa Ibom State.” He made the statement at the Interfaith Roundtable On Building A Culture of Peace a d Unity in Our Country, organized by the Harvest Committee of Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, Wuse Zone 3 Abuja. This statement by the Prelate has been widely condemned by key officers of the church and members.
