Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, inaugurated the Seafarers’ Centre of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Apapa, Lagos State on Wednesday.
During the inauguration, he reaffirmed his commitment to providing strong leadership that would promote growth and development within the maritime sector, enhancing productivity, efficiency, and proficiency.
The newly inaugurated facility is specifically designed to provide essential social, psychological, and emotional support to the dedicated crewmen and women in the maritime industry.
Oyetola, in his address, pointed out that this purpose-built facility reflects the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to strengthen the maritime sector and contribute significantly to the national economy. He emphasized that the reconstruction of the Seafarers’ Centre will elevate Nigeria’s standing in the global maritime community. It’s worth noting that the state of seafarers’ centres is one of the factors considered in the global rating of ports.
The minister also reaffirmed the Ministry’s renewed commitment and result-oriented approach, urging all heads of maritime agencies to be more daring and innovative in spearheading smart initiatives that create opportunities and pave the way for growth.
“I commend the Nigerian Ports Authority’s management for their visionary intervention in transforming this facility, which was reportedly in poor condition at the beginning of this year into a regional best-in-class facility today. I urge the management to ensure the proper and sustainable maintenance of the facility, and I assure you of our unwavering support for such initiatives,” Oyetola concluded.
